The dynamic response of turbine flowmeters in low density (gas) flows is relatively well understood and methods are available for the correction of errors due to over-registration in pulsating flows. Turbine flowmeters in liquid flows are expected to be subject to similar errors although the relevant ranges of pulsation frequency and amplitude are expected to be different. Results are reported from an investigation of the response of small (25 mm and smaller) turbine flowmeters in the pulsatile flow of cold water, at pulsation frequencies up to 300 Hz. Both experimental data and the results of modelling including the influence of fluid inertia are presented. Criteria are presented which give an approximate indication of the conditions required to avoid significant errors. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
