After severe plastic deformation by high-pressure torsion, the density of grain boundaries is so high that in HRTEM images frequently moire patterns occur open to misinterpretation. The observed dislocation densities are far too low to cause homogeneous destruction of long-range order and homogeneous amorphization in Ni3Al and NiTi, respectively. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc.
