Coupled chirped vertical gratings are proposed for on-chip group velocity dispersion engineering. The device circumvents the need for directional couplers or circulators to redirect compensated data. Finite difference time domain simulations and experimental verification of fabricated devices are performed. Dispersion values of up to 8.4 x 10(5) ps/nm/km are demonstrated.
