The objectives of the paper are to explore the driving forces of m-commerce, to analyze the institutional and functional change of the 3G mobile communication value chain and to isolate critical factors and essential characteristics of mobile applications for economic success of 3G m-commerce. As a consequence of societal, technological and economical drivers, the mobile value chain is changing dramatically. New players, new services, lower prices for transmission services, increasing revenues with m-commerce and a changing role of mobile network operators are main characteristics of the 3G mobile environment. This study, based on expert interviews, identifies the main factors contributing to changes in the 3G mobile environment. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Inc.
