A phosphor material, Y1-xEuxCa4O(BO3)(3) (0less than or equal toxless than or equal to1) film, was fabricated on SiO2 substrates by the combinatorial laser molecular-beam epitaxy method. Photoluminescence (PL) and PL decay were measured for this film library to identify the optimum composition as well as to determine the luminescence mechanism. Results showed that the observed intense emission peak at 615 nm originated from the electric dipole D-5(0)-->F-7(2) transition of Eu3+. This strong emission makes this red phosphor particularly applicable in devices such as plasma display panels and Xe lamps. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
