A quantitative description of the aggregation kinetics in the recently discovered phenomenon of reversible light-induced cluster formation in ferrofluids is presented. A simple early stage aggregation model is developed and the short-time aggregation behavior is monitored using turbidity measurements. The volume fraction and power dependency of the Fuchs stability ratio W are determined. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
