We numerically study molecular quantum computation using qubits that are implemented in the vibrational states of I-2. Logical gate operations are realized by laser pulses designed by an optimal control method within the density matrix formalism. Optimally designed gate pulses are shown to act as universal gates through a case study of the simulation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
