A eutectic mixture of choline chloride/urea is liquid at ambient temperature and is used as a non-volatile reaction medium for the synthesis and crystallization of a novel coordination polymer, Zn(O3PCH2CO2) center dot NH4, in which structure-directing ammonium ions are generated in situ from the partial decomposition of urea.
