The optimal objective of the host's response to wounding is reestablishment of the epithelial cover and recovery of tissue integrity, strength, and function. This is accomplished through inflammation, cellular proliferation, and matrix synthesis and remodeling. These processes rely on the complex interaction between cells, their surrounding matrix, and the mediators (particularly cytokines and growth factors) that govern their numerous activities. Veterinarians can positively influence wound repair by understanding its mechanisms, which should ensure selection of appropriate wound management techniques.
