Ionization and fragmentation of DNA and its constituents is it primary step in biological radiation damage. In this paper we investigate the response of nucleobases upon interaction with keV singly and multiply charged ions. The dependence of ionization and fragmentation on ion atomic number Z, charge state q and velocity r is investigated. The effect of the target molecule is discussed as well.
