As the mercury dithizonate film is illuminated by laser of 535 nm and 633 nm, respectively, multiple self-diffraction rings are observed. We conclude that the generation of the rings is mainly due to thermal effect. The self-defocusing and the change of nonlinear refractive index induced by photochromic effect are studied by Z-scan method. Moreover, the optical limiting characteristics of mercury dithizonate film are explored. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
