Over the last ten years, interest and publications involving ionic liquids have expanded exponentially. Thus far, they have predominantly been used in organic synthesis and separations. However, their use is rapidly expanding into other areas of science and technology. Research involving chiral ionic liquids has been much more limited and only recently has come to the forefront. In this work, we review the synthesis of chiral ionic liquids and their use. Today, this is an area of research that is poised for rapid development and expansion. (c) 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
