Chronic sleep deprivation in the adult population has become a major problem in modern society. The consequences include excessive sleepiness, reduced school and work performance, and an increased risk for accidents. This article reviews the pertinent medical literature regarding the prevalence and assessment of sleep deprivation. Its impact on behavioral, physiologic, and occupational parameters is discussed, and specific interventions for combating sleep deprivation are provided.
