Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta and Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 have raised the issue of whether the charge-ordering patterns are fundamentally one dimensional (stripes) or two dimensional (checkerboards). Here it is shown that a model of (interlayer) crossed stripes provides a good model for simultaneously interpreting the STM, neutron, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results. A checkerboardlike appearance can arise from interlayer hopping.
