Wrought Fe-40 at.%Al has an unexpectedly short time to breakaway oxidation at 1200 C compared to Fe3Al. Optimizing the reactive element to C ratio by either removing the C addition or by replacing Zr with Hf, increased the oxidation lifetime by a factor of two or six, respectively.
