The cooling of steel plates after the completion of rolling, while a universal requirement, was historically accomplished using home-made systems contrived by individual mills. In recent times, commercial solutions suitable for general application have evolved. This article reviews the development of such systems and explains the metallurgical and operational factors that dictate their design. It has a particular focus on MULPIC(R) technology and its uses.
