A novel nanosized SnO2/functionalized carbon nanotube composite as anodes materials in lithium ion batteries has been prepared by homogeneous precipitation. Materials were characterized by TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM and BET techniques. Compared with blank tin oxide nanoparticles, much finer tin oxide nanoparticles with higher surface area were observed with the presence of functionalized carbon nanotubes. It is proposed that functional carbon nanotubes play an important role for nanoparticles' nucleation, growth, and coagulation processes. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
