Cure rates in esophageal cancer remain low with surgical resection alone. Various combinations of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy have been used in an effort to improve treatment outcome. In this article, the results of various treatment modalities and of multimodality therapy are reviewed, and the importance of pretreatment staging is discussed.
