ZnO crystals were synthesized at 433 K using hydrazine and NaOH through a hydrothermal method, respectively. The XRD result showed that the as-synthesized sample is phase-pure wurtzite-type ZnO crystal. The crystal has hexagonal prism shape and the particle size ranges from 2 to 5 mu m. The ZnO prepared with hydrazine showed a green emission when it was excited by 325 nm laser light, while that with NaOH showed a yellow one. The possible reaction mechanism for the formation of ZnO crystal was investigated. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
