Strong pyrene excimer emission was observed for a new pyrene-thymine dyad that can be easily synthesized in the presence of Hg2+ ion. But, the enhancement of pyrene excimer emission was not detected in the presence of other metal ions. As a result, this new pyrene-thymine dyad is suited for use as a sensitive and selective turn on fluorescent chemosensor for Hg(II) ion. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
