Heat treatment produces the coherent precipitation of a 14H-type long period ordered (LPO) structure from a supersaturated alpha'-Mg matrix in Mg-Zn-Gd. Warm-extruded Mg96.5Zn1Gd2.5 (at.%) alloys with an LPO structure exhibited high tensile yield strength (345 MPa) and large elongation (6.9%), due to the refinement of alpha-Mg grains and the high dispersion of a hard LPO structure phase.
