We propose a two-dimensional photonic crystal based polarization beam splitter. The central idea of this polarization beam splitter relies on negative refraction of one polarization and conventional refraction of the other, leading to a spatial separation of two orthogonal polarizations. Finite-difference time-domain simulations are carried out in order to demonstrate our proposed idea. Our results indicate that this polarization beam splitter possesses a large separate angle for two orthogonal polarizations and can be made ultracompact. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
