A distinctive type of structure found preserved in a volcanic ash layer about 3.7 million years old appears to be a fossilised termite nest. Comparison is made to modern nests of a fungus-growing termite Macrotermes jeanneli (Isoptera, Termitidae, Macrotermitinae).
