The sol-gel combustion synthesis was used to produce nano-crystalline particles of barium hexaferrite. The results revealed that the nitrate citrate gels exhibit a self-propagating behavior after ignition. The decomposition of the gel indicated a gradual transition from an amorphous material to a crystalline phase. High values of coercivity field and saturation magnetization are obtained for sample calcined at 1000 degrees C. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
