The shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of plasticity in amorphous solids, when extended to include two-state dynamics of the zones and an effective disorder temperature, provides an accurate account of large-scale deformation in metallic glasses. Some of the main features of this theory are summarized and its use is illustrated in a simulation that shows nascent shear bands. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
