Platinum decorated functionalized carbon nanotubes were synthesized by uniformly dispersing functionalized nanotubes followed by chemical reduction of platinum salt Solution. Functionalized carbon nanotubes, obtained by potassium permanganate oxidation with the assistance of a phase transfer agent, play an important role in uniform dispersion of nanotubes in a solution as well as platinum nanoparticle formation over the nanotube Surface. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were performed to observe the micro- and nanostructure of this nanocomposite.
