This article investigates the role of covariance in a theory of finite strain plasticity based on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient. A covariance description for the energy function is developed, and the nature of referential covariance is explored. The implications of the covariance condition on the flow rule and the elastic-plastic tangent tensor are discussed.
