Silver nanoplates have been prepared through a visible light induced reduction process in the aqueous solvent. This method is green, and can yield clean products which are meaningful for investigation of the optical properties of planar nanostructures. The tendency of shape evolution from polygon toward triangle of the nanoplates was observed, and the mechanism of the anisotropic growth of them was discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
