Increased understanding of the strain localization process in aluminum foam is achieved via a dual camera data acquisition system, used to observe adjacent specimen faces. Details of compacting shear band formation are discussed, in relation to the specimen stress-strain response. Theoretical localization predictions, using a bifurcation approach, are in accordance with experimental observations. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
