The static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) is one of the recently developed flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices. This paper presents a novel power injection model (PIM) of SSSC for power flow analysis. In this model, the complex impedance of the series coupling transformer and the line charging susceptance are all included; while the original structure and symmetry of the admittance matrix can still be kept, and thus the Jacobian matrix can keep the block-diagonal properties and sparsity technique can be applied for the solution of the problem, which will result in a better convergence and higher efficiency. Based on this model, all of the commonly used control modes of SSSC are implemented in Newton power flow and the possible operation constraints of SSSC are systemically enforced. Numerical results carried out on the IEEE 57-bus system, IEEE 11 8-bus system and IEEE 300-buses system are used to validate the convergence and efficiency, and show the multi-control performance and the enforcement of the operation constraints of SSSC.
