The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of two TiO2 powders with different specific surface areas and with additions of 5wt% Pt were measured. The PL bands around 410 and 800 nm were observed for all the samples. The Pt loading reduced the intensities of the two PL bands and the PL band around 410 nm was blueshifted. We can explain these results by considering the electron transfer from the TiO2 to the Pt. Moreover, we found relationships between the PL and specific surface area of the TiO2 powders and between the changes in the PL spectra. On the basis of these relationships, we can better understand the influence of Pt on the PL of Pt-TiO2. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
