We discovered a new molecular phenomenon associated with resonance hyper-Raman (HR) scattering in solution. Resonance HR spectra of all-trans-p-carotene in various solvents exhibited several extra bands that were not assignable to the solute but were unequivocally assigned to the solvents. Neat solvents did not show any detectable HR signal under the same experimental conditions. All-trans-beta-carotene gave rise to enhanced HR scattering of solvents through a novel molecular near-field effect. Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
