A simple model for heat transfer from a space radiator with latent heat thermal energy storage has been developed. For a given heat storage and dissipation capability, analytical results have been obtained for the optimum geometry of a radiator panel/fin based on a minimum mass criterion. Numerical results for a typical configuration show that mass reductions of 20-25% or more can be achieved for pulsed heating loads of durations of the order of I h or less. At the same time, the radiator sizes can be reduced by a factor of 4 or more. The results also suggest that the benefits of energy storage will be higher for operating conditions with lower heat dissipation rates. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
