To allow rapid identification of bacteria in pure cultures and blood culture bottles, an assay was developed which is based on real-time amplification and sequencing of bacterial 16 S rRNA genes. In principle, this assay allows identification of bacteria from pure cultures within 6.5 h, and from blood cultures within approximately 7 h. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
