Copper(II) acetylacetonate (Cu(acac)Z) immobilized in ionic liquids (ILs) catalyzes the insertion of alpha-diazoacetate into N-H bonds of amines to afford glycine esters in good yields under ambient conditions. The use of ionic liquid allows easy separation of the product and recycling of copper catalyst. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
