Gene therapy has not yet met the high expectations of the early days. However, it is a promising new treatment for lung diseases. Not only single gene disorders such as CF are potential candidates for gene therapy, hut also cancer and chronic lung diseases characterized by an imbalance of damaging and protective mechanisms. This review summarizes the recent advances in the development of more efficient gene transfer systems and highlights areas of clinical application of gene therapy.
