Magnetic properties of a newly developed Fe-based amorphous material (HB1) and the characteristics of the distribution transformer using HB1 alloy have been investigated. The saturation magnetic induction B(s) for the new material is 1.64 T, which is improved by 0.07 T over an Fe-based amorphous material, Metglas (R) 2605SA1 (SA1) alloy. In addition, the core loss for the new material is very low at about 0.065 W/kg at 50 Hz, 1.4 T. A trial distribution transformer using HB1 core shows a low core loss of about 0.30 W/kg at 50 Hz, 1.4 T. Moreover, the trial distribution transformer has a lower noise level than a corresponding distribution transformer using SA1 core. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.
