We have developed a methodology for the two-dimensional multilayer formation of polypyridine ruthenium complexes on solid surfaces under mild conditions. The alternate multilayers of the ruthenium complex and Zr were fabricated on pretreated glass plates using interlayer phosphonate-Zr linkages. The RuL, molecules in the films are electronically independent, with neither interchromophoric interactions nor electronic perturbations of the Zr-IV centers in the ground state.
