A single-stage procedure was developed for preparing carboxylated microcrystalline cellulose from native cellulose in 45-55% nitric acid acting as a deposited form of catalyst of cellulose oxidation, nitrogen(IV) oxide, and as a selective reagent partially hydrolyzing cellulose.
