It has been shown that the efficiency of the reactions of the fusion of deuterons in the atmosphere is very low; therefore, nuclear fusion cannot be responsible for the generation of neutrons by lightning. The generation of neutrons in thunderstorm fields is attributed to photonuclear reactions in giant upward atmospheric discharges over thunderclouds.
