A thin cylindrical permanent magnet is levitated between two pole faces of permanent magnets. Suitably placed diamagnetic bismuth plates stabilize the horizontal motion. The floating magnet will, if locally heated at the upper surface, spontaneously oscillate with increasing amplitude. Continued heating leads to permanent rotation. A simple model based on the pendulum with mathematical analysis explains these motions.
