The application of a pack cementation coating of aluminum on Mo-rich Mo-Si-B alloys prior to oxygen exposure yields a significant improvement in the oxidation resistance over a wide temperature range (732-1372 degrees C). Upon exposure to oxygen, the Mo3Al8-rich layer that forms during the aluminum pack cementation treatment develops a protective Al2O3 layer on the surface that can be maintained by inhibiting Al diffusion into the substrate.
