An emerging field of chemistry involves construction of highly organized chromophoric complexes that can be applicable to photonic and electronic nanomaterials. While in nature highly sophisticated chromophoric complexes with spatially arranged pigments are constructed by the help of protein manifolds through the synergetic action of diverse kind of noncovalent interactions, the construction of such complexes in artificial system is accompanied by tremendous difficulty. The use of directional and specific noncovalent interaction enables us to prepare artificial chromophoric complexes without use of biopolymer scaffolds. This review manifests the usefulness of multiple hydrogen - bonding interactions to obtain functional chromophoric complexes. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
