From an overview of the different theoretical and experimental methods it was possible to evidence the presence of aggregates in ionic liquids (ILs), and to specify their role in determining the unique physical-chemical properties of these media. An understanding of the structure of ILs, as pure compounds or in the presence of dissolved species, is fundamental if the reactivity and selectivity in ILs mediated reactions is to become predictive.
