We calculated the intraband and interband optical deformation potentials for semiconducting alpha-Te from experimental data of the band gap shrinkage and softening of the A(1)-optical phonon mode in response to femtosecond laser excitation. These potentials were obtained by applying first- and second-order perturbation theory to the Frolich Hamiltonian describing the carrier-phonon interaction. The intraband optical deformation potential is considerably smaller than previously estimated values; there are no previously reported values for the interband optical deformation potential.
