Yb3+-doped NaY(MoO4)(2) with dimension of circle divide 22 x 35 mm(2) has been grown by Czochralski method. Absorption and emission spectra of the crystal were investigated. The absorption band at 976 nm has a FWHM of 41 nm for pi-polarization and 56 nm for sigma-polarization, and the absorption cross-section sigma(ab) is 3.32 x 10(-20) cm(2) for pi-polarization and 2.49 x 10(-20) cm(2) for sigma-polarization at 976 nm. The emission cross-sections a,,,, are estimated from the fluorescence spectrum using the Fuchtbauer-Ladenburg formula, which is 2.32 x 10(-20) cm(2) at 1016 nm for pi-polarization and 2.02 x 10(-20) cm(2) at 1015 nm for sigma-polarization room temperature. The fluorescence lifetime tau(f) is 535 mu s and the radiative lifetime tau(r) is 276 mu s. The laser parameters beta(min), I-sat and I-min have been calculated. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
