The first NHC-catalyzed functionalization of carboxylic anhydrides is described. In this reaction, the beta carbon behaves as a nucleophilic carbon and undergoes asymmetric reactions with electrophiles. Anhydrides with challenging beta-alkyl substituents work effectively.
