In situ polymerization method is employed to prepare sepiolite/polyurethane nanocomposite. The morphology and the dispersion of sepiolite in polyurethane have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show the sepiolite is dispersed homogeneously in the polyurethane matrix at a nanometer scale. The tensile test shows that the tensile strength and elongation at break for the nanocomposites increase with the addition of sepiolite as compared to those of the pure polyurethane. The TGA analysis reveals that the addition of nanofillers results in the higher thermal stability. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
