A novel Y-shaped two-photon active material FD3 based on the imidazole core has been synthesized and exhibited intense two-photon excited fluorescence with two-photon absorption cross-section of more than 9000 GM. Importantly, FD3 could be used as a potential two-photon excited fluorescent sensor for cysteine and homocysteine. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
