By studying metamaterials at low frequency, where wavelengths are much larger than the unit cell, the requirements of homogenization and the effective medium approximation can be easily met. The Swiss Roll medium is well-suited to the RF frequency range, and here we review its behaviour, both as a one-dimensional system where endoscope behaviour and magnetic plasmons are observed, and as a two dimensional structure which has been used to demonstrate sub-wavelength (lambda/64 resolution) imaging. In both cases, the analytical and numerical predictions based on an effective medium model are in good agreement with the measured data. (C) 2007 WILEY-VCH Veriag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
